Insaisissables / Now You See Me
Un dimanche soir à Paris après l’été. Il est temps de reprendre les bonnes habitudes et de se laisser tenter par un petit ciné du dimanche. Quand on a passé les deux derniers mois au soleil, il y en a des films à rattraper ! Alors que d’autres se profilaient à l’horizon, j’ai eu envie, soudainement, de voir Insaisissables, un film qui fait la part belle à la magie. Et moi, la magie, depuis Gigi, je suis fan ! Résultat : l’histoire de ces “Quatre cavaliers” m’a intriguée et ça n’a fait ni une ni deux : j’ai opté pour ce film plutôt que quelques chose de plus intello (Jeune et Jolie de François Ozon) ou plus sexy (Lone Ranger avec Johnny Depp).
Le pitch : quatre magiciens et assimilés sont recrutés par un mystérieux inconnu qui ne dévoile jamais son visage. Chacun reçoit une carte de tarot en guise de bristol et ils se retrouvent en un même endroit sans savoir ce qui les attend. On les retrouve un an plus tard à Las Vegas animant un show démesuré au cours duquel ils volent une banque à… Paris ! FBI et Interpol aux trousses, ils s’amusent à manipuler leur petit monde en allant toujours plus loin. “Regardez bien, de plus près, encore plus près…” Tel est leur discours, alors que le propre du magicien est justement d’attirer l’attention là où il ne se passe rien pour mieux agir ailleurs… Ajoutons à cela Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), un ancien magicien qui anime une émission s’amusant à démonter les tours de ces derniers, et le tour (c’est le cas de le dire) est joué !
Durant tout le film, on ne peut que se poser la question de savoir qui est ce mystérieux inconnu qui a engagé les quatre cavaliers. Alors que le duel s’engage entre l’agent du FBI et la débutante d’Interpol qui n’est encore jamais allée sur le terrain (Mélanie Laurent), lui sceptique à tout ce que la magie implique, elle lisant des ouvrages sur la question afin de mieux comprendre ce qui se passe, les magiciens font un teasing d’enfer afin d’attirer les foules et de faire état de leurs talents. Une vision un peu manichéenne qui sied pourtant à merveille à ce film dans lequel on nous montre les choses sans les montrer (bien qu’évidemment quelques tours simples soient finalement dévoilés), qui place la magie au cœur d’un système plus grand qu’il n’y paraît et trouve ses racines dans l’Egypte ancienne.
Verdict : voilà deux heures qui passent sans qu’on s’en aperçoive. Le rythme est soutenu, sans temps morts qui freineraient l’action. On se doute bien de quelques retournements, mais c’est pour être mieux surpris par les explications dispensées par Thaddeus. Les amateurs de magie apprécieront la part inexpliquée (il faut bien qu’il en reste un peu, de magie), les autres seront séduits par l’intrigue, la fluidité du film, le jeu des acteurs (inénarable Woody Harrelson en mentaliste surdoué) et surtout le dénouement. Un film qui mériterait plus de pub !

A Sunday evening in paris after the holidays. it is time to get back to good habits and get to a little Sunday movie. After having spent the last two months under the sunshine, there are quite a few movies to catch up with! Even though other films were quite attractive, I suddenly wanted to see Now You See Me, a movie that puts magic into the light. And I love magic since Gigi the magic princess! As a result, the story of those “Four Horsemen” puzzled me and I didn’t hesitate: I chose this movie rather than something more intellectual (Jeune et Jolie by French movie director François Ozon) or more sexy (Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp).
The pitch: four magicians are recruited by a mysterious man who never shows his face. Each of them receives a tarot card as an invitation and the meet in the same place with no idea what’s gonna happen to them. A year later, they’re in Las Vegas for a tremendous show during which they do nothing less than rob a bank in… Paris! FBI and Interpol after them, they take a certain pleasure in manipulating everybody around them and going always further. “Look attentively, closer, even closer…” This is their speech while the magician does attract the attention right where nothing happens in order to do his trick elsewhere… Add tot his Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), a former magician who leads a show unveiling the tricks and you got it!
During all the film, we cannot help but wonder who the mysterious man who hired the four horsemen is. While the battle starts between the FBI agent and the young Interpol novice who has never been to the field yet (Mélanie Laurent), he sceptical to all magic, she reading books on the subject to try to understand what’s going on, the magicians tease their audience to attract them and show their talent. A bit of a Manichean vision which suits the movie, in which we are shown and not shown quite a few thing (though a few simple tricks are revealed), perfectly and places the magic in a much bigger system than it seems, starting from Ancient Egypt.
Conclusion: that’s two hours going on in a second. The rythm is constant, with no slowing ion the action. Although we foresee a few things, it is to be better surprised by the explanations given by Thaddeus. The fans of magic will love the unexplained part of it (there needs to be still a bit of magic), the others will like the intrigue, the movie’s flow, the actors’ performance (excellent Woody Harrelson as a gifted mentalist) and the ending. A movie that deserves more publicity!
