Miss Mad est de retour ! Avec, pour bien commencer l’année 2014, un film qui va ravir les fans d’élégance à la française. Le premier biopic sur Yves Saint Laurent, avec le très charmant Pierre Niney dans le rôle-titre. Pour sortir des habitudes, commençons par le verdict : un film bluffant de justesse. Rien de moins… Pierre Niney et Guillaume Gallienne s’estompent (non, ils ne s’effacent pas, ils s’estompent) pour donner vie à Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé. Les gestes, la voix, les attitudes transmettent des émotions qu’on n’aurait pas soupçonnées.

Le pitch : Yves Saint Laurent, de ses débuts à son sacre. Une histoire d’amour profond l’unissant à Pierre Bergé, véritable mentor, l’homme de sa vie même quand il en aime un autre. Yves Saint Laurent et ses démons ; Yves Saint Laurent et ses doutes ; Yves Saint Laurent et sa timidité ; Yves Saint Laurent, les femmes, les hommes et Pierre Bergé… Le film retrace ces années qui ont porté le créateur à l’incroyable talent des rues d’Oran aux avenues de Paris. On y découvre un personnage attachant, sombre et trouble parfois, qu’on devine capable du meilleur comme du pire dans ses relations avec les autres. Un homme entier, un homme qui ne supporte pas la trahison (des autres) et dont les paroles peuvent s’avérer des lames tranchantes… Les relations complexes qui le lient à Pierre Bergé, pygmalion qui ne l’abandonnera jamais malgré les épreuves, malgré les moments douloureux et les mots qui le sont tout autant…
On aurait pu craindre un énième biopic teinté de romance fade. On sort de la salle dans un état second, l’esprit marqué par l’attendrissement pour un homme croulant sous le talent mais dont on a pu apercevoir le côté obscur. YSL n’est pas le simple génie de la mode qu’on aurait pu croire mais un personnage complexe qui aurait pu être un héros romanesque dans d’autres temps. Un chevalier amoureux des femmes mais attiré par les hommes, un homme de cœur au cœur vagabond et volage, un gentil (dans le bon sens du terme) qui sait devenir odieusement méchant dans sa souffrance. Une souffrance qu’on ressent tout au long du film…
Alors oui, on court voir Yves Saint Laurent. Même si vous n’aurez pas le plaisir de voir Pierre Niney chercher sa tante des yeux dans la salle avant la projection ou Guillaume Gallienne demander si des membres de sa famille sont là aussi, après avoir fait preuve d’un humour certain en parlant du tournage.

Yves Saint Laurent and his demons; Yves Saint laurent and his doubts; Yves Saint Laurent and his shyness, Yves Saint Laurent, the women, the men and Pierre Bergé… The movie shows those years that took the designer from the streets of Oran to the avenues of Paris. We discover a loveable character, sometimes dark and confused, a man we guess was able of the best as much as the worse in his relationships with others. An uncompromising man, one who didn’t accept betrayal (from the others) and whose words could be sharp as a blade… The complex relationship tying him to Pierre Bergé, his pygmalion who never abandonned him despite the challenges, despite the hurtful moments and the words that hurt no less…
We could have feared another faded romance. We get out of the theater in a weird mood, touched by the emotion for a man overhelmed by his own talent who had to deal with his own dark side. YSL wasn’t just the fashion genius we might have thought he was but a very complex character who could have been a romantic hero in other times. A knight in love with women but attracted by men, a man of heart whose heart was unfaithful, a good man who knew how to become obnoxiously mean in his own suffering. A suffering felt all along the movie…
So yes, go and watch Yves Saint Laurent. Even though you won’t be lucky enough to see Pierre Niney looking for his aunt in the audience before the screening or Guillaume Gallienne asking if any member of his family are here after having shown his sense of humor when talking about the shooting.
